The Hydraulic Starting Unit (HSU) as shown in the photos are designed to provide cranking power for water wash motoring and starting power for a twin LM2500/(+) gas turbine ships propulsion system. This package contains two hydraulic systems; the hydraulic starting system and the clutch cooling system.
Both systems are designed to provide 100% redundancy. Weight control and low power start-up power requirements were major design considerations of the starting package. The HSU utilizes variable speed motor drives packaged within the Local Control Panel that supply the electrical power to the dual redundant motor/pump sets which deliver the hydraulic starting power to the gas turbines.
