Electric start is fast becoming the preferred option for motoring/starting gas turbines. Power dense electric motors, coupled to an over-running clutch, are mounted to the engine’s gearbox replacing the conventional pneumatic or hydraulic starters. An off-engine variable frequency drive (VFD) cabinet completes the system. MTSI is able to provide Electric Start Systems (ESS) for gas turbine engines ranging from the GE LM500 (5 Mw) to GE’s planned LM9000.
